Remote Controlled Lighting

Contrast, drama and sparkle are among the key aims of retail lighting. Car showrooms are a perfect example of the concept. The objects to be lit are stylish and often beautiful in their own right but the low reflectance of dark paint and leather demands that high intensity lighting is used. This is most economically achieved by using narrow beam spotlights to concentrate the light on the cars and not on the floor or walls of the showroom.

Monza, the Ferrari garage in Ghent, Belgium perfectly illustrates these points. The lighting designer, Sven Goffaux of Light Point Europe, specified 35 of RCL's DR5 projectors for this project. The DR5 is a recessed remote controlled spotlight which can be aimed using RCL's proprietary technology. The lamp chosen was the 70W CDM-R111 with a 10° beam width.

Sven Goffaux added an additional requirement for the night-time scene: he wanted the beams of 11 DR5s to sweep gently around the showroom. This moving element of the display is designed to catch the eye of passing motorists. To make operation of this continuous sequence as simple as possible, it was specified that would be a single switch to initiate the sequence. When the staff leave at night, they flick the switch and the sequence starts. In the morning, switching off the sequence results in the lights returning to their preset day-time aiming angles. RCL designed and implemented the sequencing control to fully satisfy all requirements of the lighting designer.
